Do What You Love for a Living
Every day millions of employees wake up, get dressed and commute to jobs that suck. If you're one of them, you don't have to live this way.
In 2017, I was working as a writer for a book publishing company. I had enjoyed my work there for 4 years, but found myself in a rut. I had gotten bored. When a position with the copywriting department opened, I jumped at the chance — only to get rejected.
At the time my book club was reading "You Are a Badass" by Jen Sincero. That book made me realize I could live my dream of freelancing full time from home. I left my 9-to-5 a few months later and have never looked back. Here's what I did and what you can do to make your freelance dreams come true.
Make a plan
Assess everything from your finances to your partner's input. Create a timeline with action points and deadlines. Generate a "why" statement. Figure out why you want to do this. What motivates you? What are you passionate about?
Do the research
Decide what you want to do and how to find clients. Talk to others who have gone before you and succeeded at what you want to do. Find a coach who can help you every step of the way.
Take the leap!
I decided early on I would quit my job after I landed my first client. Business started out slow with just one client, but then exploded a few months later.
I no longer look for work. Clients reach out to me. And occasionally, I have to turn down a gig. It's a wonderful problem to have!
Only you can decide when it's time to say "buy-bye." When you do, I hope you never look back.
